There are still some public charging points, typically " destination chargers " that offer FREE charging, for example sports clubs and supermarkets and owners of older Tesla models still enjoy free unlimited use of the Supercharger Network.
With the increase in the number of electric cars on the road we have seen massive growth in the number of public charging points and these are not free.
Costs vary depending on the location and the supplier.
There are more than 33,996 car charging points across the UK, based at around 20,500 locations.(Updated August 2022 ) with over 1500 being added in the last month according to Zap Map.
Back in August 2019 Nissan revealed that there were more electric charging locations than conventional fuel stations which have been declining over recent years.
In contrast EV charging sites are increasing rapidly – from just over 900 in 2012, rising to over 6,500 in 2018. With locations increasing monthly the total so far in 2022 has reached a staggering 20,500 including more than 13,400 Rapid Charging points.
